If Seattle’s Dave B embodies the next generation of MCs, then the genre is in good hands. The multi-talented rapper, singer, writer, and producer, also brings lyrical content reflective of the golden age of hip-hop.
The depth and versatility of his stylings can partially be attributed to his vast musical influences. They range from gospel icons Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin, to hip-hop luminaries André 3000, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu, to jazz legend Thelonious Monk, to rock god Jimi Hendrix. “I’m really into going to the record store and digging and finding things,” he says. “I just love music.”
Dave B sees no boundaries, and that’s the message he wants his music to convey to his listeners. “I want people to get a sense of be yourself,” he explains. “It’s hella shit going on in the world. The media, online, so many people telling you who to be. You shouldn’t have to try to be yourself. You should just be.”
Dave B’s wisdom, talent and mindset make him an invaluable asset to his class of MCs.
